World University Rankings 2021 - Compiled is a compilation of major university rankings published during the year 2020. All universities listed on these rankings systems are re-ranked based on the average position of all ranking systems.

The compilation includes five major university rankings by taking some factors into consideration:

It ranks at least 1000 universities.

Its shortlisting method is clearly stated, such as how to narrow all universities around the world into its shortlisted rank.

Its ranking system includes or at least reflects the three major performance measurements: academic, research, and service.

It has been continuously publishing annual world university rankings for, at least, the last five years.

To support the results from the average position ranks of these five major ranking systems, the compilation also lists three other popular university rankings. However, these are seen as additional references and comparative assessments since they are further concentrated on one or more aspects of university performance (mostly research publications).

Some Notes

In total, there are 2,429 universities with rank data compiled from all five university ranking systems.

The average position ranking only categorizes universities that are rated by at least three of the selected world university ranking systems (having only two or less ‘unranked ranks’ (UR), which are printed in red). These universities are listed on the Top 1000 Section and The Rank 1001+ Section. There are 1,310 universities listed in this category.

The rest of the universities, which are only listed on one or two ranking systems, are listed in the Unranked Section. There are 1,129 universities listed in this category.

The average position is counted from the rank of each ranking system as is, with no leeway for compromises or modifications. As a result, the average position rank of some universities may not reflect its objective rank as some ranking systems do not include these universities due to their own set of criteria. For instance, University of California San Francisco (UCSF) or Karolinska Institute, which do not have undergraduate programs, are not ranked in QS and THE since both ranking systems only list universities that run both undergraduate and graduate programs.
